UV Protection Guide

Understanding how to protect yourself from harmful UV rays is essential for preventing skin damage, premature aging, and reducing the risk of skin cancer.

Sunscreen Guide

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ for everyday use
  • Apply 15-30 minutes before sun exposure
  • Use approximately 1 oz (a shot glass full) for full body coverage
  • Reapply every 2 hours, or after swimming/sweating
  • Don't forget often-missed areas: ears, back of neck, tops of feet

Protective Clothing

  • Wear wide-brimmed hats (at least 3 inches all around)
  • Choose UPF-rated clothing when possible
  • Opt for long sleeves and pants in lightweight fabrics
  • Wear UV-blocking sunglasses that wrap around
  • Consider sun protective swimwear for extended water activities

Special Considerations

Children

  • Keep infants under 6 months out of direct sunlight
  • Use SPF 50+ for children over 6 months
  • Reapply sunscreen more frequently (every 1-2 hours)
  • Use sun protective clothing and hats
  • Schedule outdoor activities before 10 AM or after 4 PM

Seniors

  • Use moisturizing sunscreen for drier skin
  • Be aware of medications that increase sun sensitivity
  • Pay special attention to thin skin areas
  • Stay hydrated and seek shade frequently
  • Get regular skin checks for suspicious spots

Sensitive Skin

  • Choose mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide
  • Look for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic formulas
  • Test new products on a small area first
  • Consider UPF clothing as primary protection
  • Consult a dermatologist for personalized recommendations

Sunscreen Tips

Application

Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before sun exposure to allow it to bind to your skin. Use enough to cover all exposed areas - most people only apply 25-50% of the recommended amount.

Water Resistance

Water-resistant sunscreens are rated for either 40 or 80 minutes of protection while swimming or sweating. Reapply immediately after towel drying, regardless of the time elapsed.

Storage

Store sunscreen in a cool, dry place. Exposure to heat can break down the active ingredients. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of 2-3 years, but check the expiration date before using.
